What to Expect in Your First Hot Yoga Class
Trying hot yoga for the first time can feel exciting and a little intimidating. Remember: everyone in the room was a beginner once. Our teachers are here to support you, and your only job in your first class is to show up, breathe, and experience it.
Before Class: Hydrate & Prepare
Because classes are held in a heated room, a little preparation goes a long way toward making your experience more comfortable and enjoyable.
- Hydrate ahead of time: Make sure you are hydrated the day before and the day of. You don't need to drink extra, just enough. Trying to rapidly hydrate before class can cause stomach aches and isn't recommended.
- Bring water: A full bottle is essential. You’ll sip throughout class to stay hydrated. Many students like to add a mineral or hydration boast supplement to their water for an extra zing!
- Bring a towel: You will sweat. A towel helps with grip, comfort, and keeping your mat from getting too slippery. You will notice over time as your body becomes acclimated to the heat, you will crave the drip!
- Bring a yoga mat: If you don’t have one, ask us about rentals or recommendations.
- Eat light: A small snack is fine, but avoid heavy meals right before class.
During Class: Listen to Your Body
The room will feel hot—that’s by design. The heat helps your muscles warm up, supports deeper stretching, and encourages focus. But especially in your first class, it’s important to pace yourself.
- Take breaks anytime: Resting is part of the practice, not a sign of failure.
- Child’s Pose is always welcome: At any point, you can come down into Child’s Pose or lie on your back to reset.
- Your breath is your guide: If your breathing feels strained, slow down or take a pause.
Your Only Goal: Show Up & Experience It
In your first class, the goal is not to “do it perfectly” or keep up with every posture. Your goal is simply to experience the practice and the environment.
It is completely normal to spend part of your first class in Child’s Pose, seated, or lying down. You are still doing yoga when you are resting, breathing, and staying present with yourself.
Come as you are. We’ll meet you there.
